Paramedics utilize advanced assessment techniques, up to date treatment strategies, and state of the art equipment to manage a variety of emergent and nonemergent conditions in the out of hospital environment. Paramedics treat patients in their homes and other locations, they transport patients to the hospital, and transfer patients between hospitals.

The Bossier Parish Community College Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).

Goal:

To prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Paramedic degree will be able to demonstrate:

  1. professional behavior consistent with the BPCC Paramedic Program Code of Conduct.
  2. the ability to acquire and analyze information to answer clinical questions and provide appropriate treatment to patients. 
  3. the knowledge, skill and ability to manage patients in the out of hospital environment.
  4. the ability to lead the EMS team in providing out of hospital patient care.
  5. the ability to communicate with patients, family members, other first responders, law enforcement and hospital personnel using verbal, written and electronic methods.

This program includes a required clinical component. Persons interested in pursuing this degree should be aware of all information concerning clinical programs described on the Division of Nursing and Allied Health  page.

Specific Requirements:

To participate in the clinical portion of the paramedic program, students must have a valid EMT or AEMT license in the state of Louisiana. Students without a valid license must complete EMTP 100 and EMTP 100L with a minimum grade of C and pass the National Registry of EMTs licensure exam for Louisiana before participating in the clinical portion of the paramedic program. 

Program courses requiring a valid EMT or AEMT license in the state of Louisiana are EMTP 201, EMTP 202, EMTP 203, EMTP 204, EMTP 205, EMTP 206, EMTP 207, EMTP 208, EMTP 209, EMTP 211, EMTP 212, EMTP 213, EMTP 214, and EMTP 215.

Selection for the program is based on grade point average for qualification courses and submission of a complete program application by the established deadline. Students applying for paramedic program courses must submit all required information for programs with a clinical component (described earlier in this section), pass a drug/alcohol screen, undergo a comprehensive background check, pay a clinical fee, and meet all additional Bureau of EMS and clinical site requirements.

Prior to beginning program courses, students must demonstrated basic competency in:

Mathematics (ACT Mathematics score of 19 or higher; placement test scores indicating competency, or completion of MATH 102/MATH 012L, or completion of ALHT 116);

English (ACT English score of 18 or higher; placement test scores indicating competency, or completion of ENGL 101/ENGL 011L );

BPCC must have received official copies of all transcripts from all colleges attended, prior to being considered for admission to the paramedic program.

Paramedic program classes may be offered as either a day and evening program. Paramedic training is intense involving over 1,000 hours of didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field training.

Advanced standing and specific EMTP courses may be granted to students who have successfully completed paramedic training, hold a current Paramedic license from the State of Louisiana. Credit will be granted upon successful completion of all courses in the Paramedic Associate of Applied Science curriculum and submission of required documentation. All other graduation requirements must be met.

Upon successful completion of the Paramedic program courses, a student is eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians- Paramedic exam and apply for State licensure.

Third Semester: 13 Credit Hours


Fourth Semester: 6 Credit Hours


Additional Courses for Associates Degree: 18 Hours


Total Credit Hours required for Associate of Applied Science in Paramedic: 62
