General Studies, AGS

The Associate of General Studies degree provides a foundation in several disciplines, including English, mathematics, and science. The degree plan offers the student an opportunity to establish a base of knowledge about general education courses while using electives to explore one or more specialized areas of study. This degree works for students who need to make a decision about a career choice and for students who plan to move to a four-year college to earn a bachelor’s degree not typically offered at a community college.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Associate of General Studies will have demonstrated:

  1. comprehension of information by reading college-level material across the curriculum;
  2. ability to communicate effectively in written English across the curriculum;
  3. proficiency in oral communication skills across the curriculum;
  4. ability to comprehend and perform course-specific mathematical problems;
  5. development of critical thinking skills across the curriculum;
  6. ability to use library resources to research topics across the curriculum; and
  7. ability to utilize and apply current computer technology across the curriculum.

Required Courses for Associate of General Studies:

Freshman Year


First Semester: 15 Credit Hours


Second Semester: 15 Credit Hours


Sophomore Year


Third Semester: 15 Credit Hours


  • 200-Level English or Foreign Language Credit Hours: 3
  • History Elective Credit Hours: 3
  • Approved Elective Credit Hours: 3 *
  • Approved Elective Credit Hours: 3 *

Fourth Semester: 15 Credit Hours


  • Approved Elective Credit Hours: 3 **
  • Approved Elective Credit Hours: 3 **
  • Approved Elective Credit Hours: 3 **
  • Natural Science Elective Credit Hours: 3

Total Credit Hours required for the Associate of General Studies: 60


Students must meet prerequisites before taking any given course. Students must make a “C” or higher in all courses which satisfy graduation requirements in order to receive the Associate of Applied Science in Communication from BPCC.

* Any 3-hour credit course except co-requisite courses.

**For transfer to a four-year institution, students are strongly advised to take ENGL 102  instead of ENGL 103 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate mathematics course.

***For transfer to a four-year institution, students are strongly advised to take MATH 102  instead of MATH 124  or MATH 101 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate mathematics course.

****For transfer to a four-year institution, students are strongly advised to take SPCH 110  instead of SPCH 115 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate mathematics course.
