Fire Science, AAS


The purpose of the proposed Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science is to provide a structured program of college-level education based on the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) national model curriculum.  

The objectives of the program are to:

  1. Provide an avenue of continued education for firefighting personnel. 
     
  2. Provide an avenue for persons interested in fire science, including those serving on volunteer fire departments, with access to online education and thus become citizens who are more knowledgeable of fire safety and prevention, and
     
  3. Provide industry personnel who work in areas of high fire risk and hazardous materials transport with an online education focusing on hazardous materials response, fire response, and knowledge necessary to minimizing fire risk and enhancing safety.


Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be able to demonstrate

  1. Knowledge of the fire protection and emergency services profession;
  2. An understanding of building construction and fire alarm and suppression systems to promote and enhance safety and fire prevention;
  3. The ability to apply scientific principles to predict the behavior of fires;
  4. Application of federal, state, and local laws to provide ethical leadership in fire and EMS services;
  5. Knowledge of advanced principles of firefighting techniques, including hydraulics and water supply and principles of ground control;
  6. The ability to analyze occupational health and safety risks and hazards, including recognition and response to hazardous materials;
  7. Knowledge of foundational and advanced fire investigation; and
  8. Proficiency in general education competencies, including reading, written communication, oral communication, mathematical computation, critical thinking, research skills, and computer literacy.

Total Credit Hours required for the Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science: 60


*For transfer to a four year institution, students are strongly advised to take MATH 102  instead of MATH 101 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate math course.

**BLGY 230 CHEM 107 , PHSC 105 , or any other science elective approve by the advisor.   

Students who hold the following International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or International Accreditation for Fire Service Organizations (Pro-Board) Certification can receive credit for the following courses upon completion of 17 credit hours of Fire Science (FRSC) courses at Bossier Parish Community College.
