Communication Media, Mass Communication Concentration, AAS


The Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media with a concentration in Mass Communication is designed for students interested in the areas of television and film.  The curriculum is designed to provide hands-on experience in all areas of production. The goal is to prepare students for entry into the workforce or for transfer to a 4-year program.

Learning Outcomes:

There are five concentrations in the Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media: Mass Communication, Sound and Music Recording, Graphic Design/Computer Animation, Photography, and Multimedia. Recipients of the degree in the Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media will have demonstrated:

  1. skills required for entry-level employment and performance in media-related services in their area of specialty: broadcasting, business of music, computer animation, film, graphic design, media for the ministry, photography, radio, sound recording technology, and TV production;
  2. ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate job-related services within their areas of expertise in media;
  3. skills to comprehend and evaluate information related to their area of responsibility by producing a quality finished product; and
  4. skills to effectively communicate with staff, administration, and clients using databases, scheduling, preparation of written reports and oral presentations.

Required Courses for the Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media with a concentration in Mass Communication:

Freshman Year


First Semester: 15 Hours


Second Semester: 15 Hours


Sophomore Year


Third Semester: 15 Hours


Fourth Semester: 15 Hours


Total Credit Hours: 60


Students must meet prerequisites before taking any given course.

Students must make a ” C ” or higher in all courses which satisfy graduation requirements in order to receive the Associate of Applied Science in Communication Media from BPCC.

1For transfer to a four-year institution, students are strongly advised to take MATH 102  instead of MATH 101 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate mathematics course.

*The student must take a minimum of 18 hours from the following elective tracks for the Mass Communication concentration:

TV Track: COMM 109 COMM 111 ,COMM 201 , COMM 203 , COMM 204 , COMM 207 , COMM 210 COMM 211 COMM 212 COMM 213 COMM 239 , COMM 250 , COMM 256 , or any other Communication course.

Film Track: COMM 109 COMM 111 COMM 153 COMM 204 , COMM 225 , COMM 239 , COMM 240 , COMM 257 , COMM 280 ,COMM 282 COMM 283 COMM 299  or any other Communications course.

**Behavioral/Social Sciences elective must be chosen from ANTH 201 , ANTH 202 ; BADM 201 , BADM 202 ; CJUS 101 ; GPHY 101 , GPHY 102 GPHY 105 .  POSC 201 , POSC 202 ; PSYC 201 , PSYC 205 , PSYC 206 , PSYC 210 , PSYC 220 , PSYC 225 , PSYC 290 ; SLGY 201 , SLGY 202 , SLGY 203 , SLGY 204 , SLGY 207 SLGY 290
