Performing Arts, Music Concentration, AA

The Associate of Applied Arts in Performing Arts (Music Concentration) is designed for students who desire formal music training - either as a two-year degree or as the first two years of serious music study toward a four-year university Bachelor of Music degree; those who seek potential careers in music to include performing, composition, and teaching; and those who wish to enhance their music performance skills through solo and ensemble performances in band and choir.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Associate of Arts in Performing Arts with a concentration in Music will have demonstrated:

  1. comprehension of tonal music theory, aural theory skills, and Twentieth-Century theoretical concepts;
  2. proficiency in performance abilities on a primary instrument or voice;
  3. comprehension of the basic historical significance and development of Western Art music from the Middle Ages to the present;
  4. basic proficiency in performance skills on piano; and
  5. successful communication within the music environment using verbal, written, and basic computer literacy skills.

This program articulates with one or more institutions or agencies. Refer to the Articulation Agreements   section of the catalog for further detail.

Required Courses for Associate of Arts in Performing Arts with a Concentration in Music:

Freshman Year


First Semester: 14 Hours


Second Semester: 17 Hours


Sophomore Year


Third Semester: 15 Hours


Fourth Semester: 15 Hours


Total Credit Hours: 61


SPCH 110  or SPCH 115  (grade of “C” or higher)

Students must meet prerequisites before taking any given course.

Students must make a “C” or higher in all courses which satisfy graduation requirements in order to receive the Associate of Arts in Performing Arts from BPCC.

#For transfer to a four-year institution, students are strongly advised to take MATH 102  instead of MATH 101 . Students must seek the assistance of their advisor to determine the appropriate mathematics course.

Additional Requirements for the Associate of Arts in Performing Arts with a Concentration in Music:


  • Music majors will perform a sophomore (fourth semester) solo recital.
  • Music majors are required to pass the Piano Proficiency Exam. Students typically enroll in MUSC 299:Piano Proficiency  in their fourth semester of piano study in conjunction with their applied piano course. Students must earn a grad of “S” in MUSC 299:Piano Proficiency .
  • Music majors are required to perform on student recitals each semester. This also includes the applied instruments for which they are enrolled other than their primary instrument.
  • Music majors are required to take a music theory placement exam prior to enrolling in MUSC 122:Music Theory I  for proper advising in the music theory sequence.
